Yellow changes in January / Xmas plans

We now have Christmas service levels in from all operators in our region, including Stagecoach. See them all summarised here.

Yellow Buses in Bournemouth have changes to many routes from 6th January. Details here. Here's how the new network will look:

The main change is that the 1C will no longer run its section of route between Bournemouth and Poole, leaving the half-hourly 1 as Yellow's only remaining service to Poole. How long is that likely to last? If it does disappear, will fares increase on More M1/M2?

Other changes in January have been announced for the following routes (click the numbers for timetables where available):

  • First Portsmouth 6, 12, 13, 14
  • First Weymouth 2
  • More X8, 13
  • Stagecoach 38, 64
  • Bluestar 17

More on them as we get it. Notable that in Portsmouth, new route 6 and 12, funded by the city council, will only operate between approximately 9am and 3pm weekdays and 9am to 1pm Saturdays, severely limiting their usefulness to many people. Here are where they will run:

The 12 of course, partly replaces the 17, which was diverted away from Tipner back in September. The 17 still runs between Copnor and Southsea. The 12's southern terminus will be Fratton Way. Where?

Outside Tesco Extra on another large new retail park. Good to see a new bus link here, but let's hope that the frequency and operating hours get a boost to make use really attractive to passengers.

  1. The 12 terminus is by Fratton Park Portsmouth Football Club too. There's also a medical centre/ surgery in the area too.

  2. As these two new services in Portsmouth will I assume only be used by the older residents running between about 0900 and 1400 will be a more than ample service

  3. Yellow Buses have gone backwards with their 1 route between Bournemouth and Poole with it almost mimicking their old 22 extension (which went via Penn Hill back then to cover the then withdrawn Wilts&Dorset 101) with a half hourly service, although, interesting to note is that there will be no Sunday service between Westbourne and Poole on the 1 route.

Unfortunately, where there have been different people at the helm at YB, from a customer point of view, things have been messed up quite badly and haven't really recovered from the change where the bus routes were named (Royal Line, Priory Line, etc...) and routes completely changed.

The mistake they made when they did their last change was duplicating the M1 and M2 routes which made no sense...they would have been better off literally bringing back the pre-line names timetables & routes.

It does seem like these latest changes do reflect that certain routes really havent recovered from those changes and that also, with competition from Morebus, they are trying to keep Routes 1, 1b & 3 at a frequency that can compete in some form with the M1 & M2 (minus Route 1 between Bournemouth and Poole).

    1. It's a big issue, and the constant changes are starting to get noticed by the general travelling public as a sign things aren't going well.

I wonder how much these reductions (particularly on the 1) were driven by people switching to Morebus after getting tired of their bus route changing all the time? The direct Southbourne to Westbourne/Poole routes were axed last January and reinstated early this year. I wonder how many passengers came back...?

      Delete
    2. Yes, the constant changes are not good for the Yellows. For years, all they did was a few minor tweaks here and there but nothing really major.

Think back to when Transdev made their mark and completely changed everything back in July 2006 to make everything a bit more simple & streamlined.
Ok sure, a few routes were merged (the 2 and the 28a & 28b for example after a while) and a few routes were tweaked (the 1b somerford section was transferred over to the 1c after a year) but overall, most of the routes survived intact for years until the January 2017 network overhaul.

I think it will be quite a while until they see ridership increase and I think that the January 2019 changes will just make things worse.

  4. I do ish Bluestar would do something about improving ther 18 service. The majority now most of the day run in pairs. Even on Sundays they run in pairs so the daytime frequency of every 15 minutes becomes every 30 minutes. At peak times on weekdays I am not surprised they bunch up with the volume of other vehicles on the road. However at off peak the service never seems to sort itself out with vehicles continually running in pairs thus the 7/8 minute service becomes every 15 minutes and at times gaps of 20 to 25 minutes can be experienced. They advertise themselves as a shining service in the City. The 18 is most certainly not a shining service.Once it ran reasonably well but of late it just gets worse.

    3. They need to do something with Shirley Rd which cause all the hold-ups like having bus pull-ins so that they don`t bring the traffic to a standstill all the time.

      Delete
    4. With about 30 buses in each direction every hour this is why there is so much traffic chaos on Shirley Rd.

      Delete
    5. A total nonsense to suggest 30 buses each hour in each direction causes all tthe traffic chaos along Shirley Road.Obviously not aware that other modes of traffic are the main cause. If there were bus pull ins, more than likely the bus driver
would never get out of them, except by forcing their way out.You should be supporting public transport not knocking it into the ground. Some people remind Me of a famous rail photogropher named Ivo Peters.who loved the once Somerset and Dorset railway, tried to save it from closure, took hundreds of photos of trains and other on it,but rarely used it,as everywhere He went,He drove His car.So did hundreds of others and that's why it closed

    6. It’s 14 buses an hour from First (2,3) and 18 from Bluestar (4, 7, 17 and 18).
Shirley doesn’t need 34 buses an hour to town. Some services do need to be diverted via Hill Lane... for example, the 4 and 7 should divert...

      Delete
    7. Ummm...why do they need to be diverted? Do you not think that some people might actually use these links?

The 4 is by far the quickest bus from Shirley to Lordshill for example. It's also used by students going from Shirley to Mountbatten School.

The 7 forms a useful link from Shirley to the Tesco in Millbrook. Residents from the Cumbrian Way area of Millbrook also use it get to Shirley. How would you divert the 7 via Hill Lane if you still wanted it to serve its unique section from Cumbrian Way/Oakley Road to Shirley?

I'm sure if either Bluestar or First could see Hill Lane as a potential revenue-rich growth area they would jump at the chance.

As for 2 of the 'Anonymous' comments above the problem with Shirley isn't the number of buses but the traffic congestion caused by poor parking (and its impact on travel flow) and the huge volume of cars (worse at the moment due to the Millbrook roundabout roadworks). The only real cure is a fundamental rethink on people's travel habits (and some enforcement of traffic regulations)

Before anyone asks I live in Shirley so think I am qualified to comment.

      Delete
    8. The issue they have is that City to Shirley is a well-used route, so if either company were to cut the number of buses on the corridor (including diverting), they'd be handing the upper hand to the other.

As for diverting to reduce the congestion - it's a service cut to many who live along there. Where would the routes rejoin? If they come back at Foyes Corner, that's barely making a difference. Rejoining at Shirley Avenue would be a nightmare for buses trying to turn back onto the High Street. Anywhere else misses out Shirley Precinct which is a key area.

Claudio, you're right when you say Shirley doesn't need 34 buses an hour to town. But I don't see either company wanting to give in. It's sadly one of the down sides to the current deregulated bus market.

      Delete
    9. What a load of tosh!Of course buses stopped along Shirley holds up the traffic behind if there is insufficient room to overtake the bus and this happens all the time.

    11. The situation in Shirley Road and Shirley High Street is not helped by the fact that the City Council narrowed the road some years ago, taking out one lane each way and much of the parking. The idea was that it would "encourage" drivers coming in from the Romsey direction to use Tebourba Way, Millbrook Road and Mountbatten Way. This wonderful scheme was put forward by some idiot who never had an idea rejected by his managers. Oddly enough, he was a keen cyclist, and ruined it for cyclists as well!

      Delete
    12. I have never, ever seen a picture of Shirley Road/High Street with an extra lane in each direction.....There's still lots of parking as well! There was an interesting post on the Southampton Heritage: People and Places Facebook page which also found no evidence of this 'fact'. I will of course stand corrected if you do find any pictures to prove your statement.

      Delete
    13. As a city resident with direct experience of Shirley Road through the decades, I can state that the main reason for the traffic congestion along Shirley Road is the ludicrous decision to narrow the road. When the road was wider it was possible to pass buses at bus stops, vehicles waiting to turn right and delivery vans. Now you get stuck behind any obstruction until it removes itself or the occasional gap in the oncoming traffic allows you to get past. Not helping is the increasing width of vehicles over the years and the much increased times spent by one-man operated buses loading passengers.

Aberdeen is the group head office and has the back office functions like payroll, HR, legal etc. The really important part of UK Bus in terms of operational planning etc is based in Bristol. Even then, the decisions are devolved.

Just because a driver told you, don't just believe it. Canteen rumours are often the least accurate.

  6. Back to Bluestar 17, checking differences from 28th January:
    - No visible changes to route, probably a better allocation of bus stops at Woolston or City Centre
    - The Evening service is revised, but not sure still if it gives a much more real scheduling
    - An even earlier service towards Weston with the first bus at 4:36am instead of 5:06am from West Quay (M-Sat)
    - Some early evening services do terminate at Vincents Walk and do not go further to Adanac

I believe we may have another change to the timetable before the summer, as I don't believe they did everything required to improve reliability.

News from Xelabus, unconfirmed, that services in Hedge End will be further reduced due to poor patronage. Especially the X4 which may have the last two journeys Eastleigh - Hedge End - Eastleigh, completely withdrawn, as well as a withdrawal of Sunday Service.
Also, I organised a series of polls on facebook groups of Hedge End whether people are happy about bus services, and they are not.
However, I am unsure if it reflects truly the people's wishes.

  7. Another thing I would like to talk about is, again, the services at Hedge End area. I do know it is difficult to run services (t)here, as most people have access to a car, but then also there's people like me, who can't afford a car, and also the elderly.
This is a thing people with the concessionary passes need considering to do, so they don't lose more services. It doesn't sound good, but it is the only way to save their beloved services:
    - Concessionary pass holders, when possible, voluntarily pay for one return journey per week: If the cost of that ticket is £6, in reality, they would contribute with extra 86p per week, as they would use their concessionary pass on the other 6 days.

Companies, such as Bluestar and First, do not serve Hedge End properly, but there is margin to improvements, but at the cost of price increases:

    Bluestar:
Southampton plus bus passes are a bit too low and an increase may be needed:
Day rider from 5.80 to 6.50 (6.00 on the app/key) (12% increase on the driver, 3% increase on the app/key)
7 day ticket, on the app/key, from 17.00 to 18.50 (buying from the driver would cost 20.00, from the current 18.50) (increases of 8% on the app/key and driver)
30 day ticket, on the app/key, from 60.00 to 66.00 (buying from the driver would cost 77.00, from the current 70.00) (10% more on both cases)
90 day ticket, on the app key, from 143.00 to 155.00 (8% increase)

As a bus user, I wouldn't mind to pay more for my journey, as long as they did improvements to services.

  8. First, with their services in Hamble and Hedge End, by keeping their prices as they are at the moment, but also thinking of going further and serve more areas, would attract more patronage, due to the new travelling opportunities.
    - Service 6 would extend to run to Hedge End Village, via Hamble Lane, Lowford, Providence Hill, Latitude Estate, Kings Copse Avenue and Lower Northam Road. On the way back, it would go via Bursledon Road, Heath House Lane, Latitude Estate, Lowford and Hamble Lane, where services would resume current service.

    - Service 8, after serving the Superstores, would go via Turnpike Way, Upper Northam Road to the Village and then towards Bursledon Road, Heath House Lane, Kings Copse Avenue, Maypole Roundabout and Grange Road, then resume current service from Locke Road.
These extensions would operate hourly, Monday to Sunday (combined 30 minute), and clearly identified as service 66 (or 6A) and 88 (or 8A).

  9. Xelabus is a lost case, as they only run services if the council wave them with subsidies, so I am just waiting until they go pop, or bought by one of the Big 5. So, no suggestion from me. No next stop announcements available (unless you use an app), no USB charging points, no ticket issued when you buy a single journey. Had my first (and last) experience, and it was so strange. The driver was un-polite and didn't issue a bloody ticket. Bus industry do not need this kind of companies.

  10. I trust someone at Xelabus with authority will reply to your comments.Other companies only operate services in some instances that are contracted out by the Councils by competetive tender. If you have had a bad experience with any company then you should take the matter up with them.I also don't think those living in the Locke Road and area beyond would wish to be dragged all the way round Hedge End to get there.Hamble to Hedge End has been tried in the past with a reasonable frequency, but was poorly patronised and that's why it was withdrawn.Lot's of people would I'm sure love improved bus services, but the problem is when they are put there, few patronise them.Any way to charge pensioners in any form would have to be a change in Central Government policy as to how the scheme works. At present the only thing councils can do if they wish is to further restrict the hours of use. It's not only pensioners who have these types of pass as disabeled people have them and disabeled carries a wide range of reasons as to why people have them i.e the person is not in most cases in a wheelchair and more than likely shows no sign of the disability they have.

    1. Well I know it would be a pain for Locke Rd residents, however these changes, in my point of view, would be more than welcome to other residents...
I am not asking for the scheme to be changed (although a small contribution would be more than welcome). This would be 100% voluntary. Up to the individual to buy a return ticket a week to help subsidise the route they use.

  11. Claudio it was not Empress Roads choice to withdraw the 2 between City Centre and Thornhill it was Head Office that told management in Southampton to stop running the 2 between City Centre and Thornhill.

If Aberdeen had not got involved the 2 would still be running the same route as the 18.

  15. Bournemouth - I note the UNIBUS U3 also changes on 6th Jan. It gains a vacation 30 min service, plus Saturdays hourly on all dates. This is a direct response to Yellow buses withdrawal of the regular 8 over the same route and the new 6a only covering part of it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A better solution would be, just to piss YB off, making the 14 and the U3 work together and extend the 14 to serve also the university. However, due to traffic problems at Wallisdown on the way to the University, it would be a huge problem... so this move from Morebus is a really clever one.

      Delete
    2. 14 already works as a route between Poole & Kinson (having been rerouted when the 17 was introduced) and has recently been extended to replace another former Yellows route anyway between Kinson & Bournemouth Hospital...

HOWEVER, cast your memory back to when the 14 was the old 164 route in September 2005...
it was running half hourly between Poole & West Howe, but every 15 minutes between West Howe & Bournemouth Interchange via the University, Glenferness Avenue, Bournemouth Square & Lansdowne.

Some would say that it was a decade too early but it was a rather interesting move when the Yellows were up for sale at that time.

Yes, ok sure, it isnt the same as extending it via the Unibus U3 or YB 8 route to Boscombe, etc... but it does show that Wilts & Dorset back then did take some risks

It's almost worth Morebus setting up a new route, lets say the 14A as an example, and having it run the same or similar route to the 14 between Poole & Wallisdown and then having it run via the University, Winton, Boscombe, Southbourne to Christchurch or something and having it inbetween the U3 services

(infact, if anyone remembers the routes that Wilts & Dorset were competing against Yellow Buses with back in 2005 and if that happened now, in what state would Yellow Buses actually be in to respond? Don't get me wrong, I mainly travel on Yellow Buses myself but even I admit that they clearly balls up when they changed over to the letter pre-fix routes --- makes me wonder if they will recover from it...)

      Delete
    3. I also remember the extension of the 158/159/160 to Christchurch via Cranleigh Road to compete with the Yellows' 23. Didn't last quite so long, but I reckon doing the same again now might have a very different result.

      Delete
    4. It might also be worth Morebus increasing the frequency of the 15 since it provides a vital link between RB Hospital and the university. It used to run every 30 minutes several years ago before the frequency was halved for some reason.

The route could potentially be amended to operate to the hospital via Charminster and Boscombe, as suggested upthread.

      Delete
    5. I think the 15/165-as-was ran every 30 minutes to compete with the Yellows 17/18/33/34 back when it ra via Muscliffe. As for running via Charminster and Boscombe, that would be a very indirect route for the Uni to the Hospital (as well as significant duplication with the U3), and it'd be much quicker to get a 17 to Lansdowne followed by an X1/2/3.

I wonder if it may be worth More making their Christmas Day extensions to the Hospital and Christchurch more permanent.

    7. Don't forget the 161 (Poole - Kinson - Ringwood) too which they created extra journeys between Kinson and Bournemouth to combine with the 132/133 between Northbourne and Bournemouth to run every 10 minutes to compete against the Yellows 3 & 4 (plus the 33/34 between Moordown & Bournemouth).

And yes, the 165 route at half hourly (and if my memory serves me correctly, some years before that, some journeys also went to/from Christchurch --- can't remember how many years prior that was)

    8. Anyway, it is a well done from Morebus, and it may mean an eventual withdrawal of YB service 8 in 2019.
Then who knows if the U3 is extended to terminate at Wallisdown, if the university allows that to happen!

      Delete
    9. You're right, I doubt the 8 will last through 2019 now. The uni (and more) probably wouldn't see the point in terminating it at Wallisdown though - it's walking distance for those who can, and there's the U2/15/17 for those who can't

    11. or Wallisdown to connect with the 14, but would still involve a change...
So some peak extension would be good...
Also, the Uni buses need some sort of revamp, in terms of service:
U1 - I think it is fine as it is
U2 - maybe a Saturday timetable, hourly, like the U3
U3 - has the most potential, and perhaps an extension to Mountbatten would be welcome.
U4 - I don’t see the point of this route... never saw it busy From Westbourne to Lansdowne.

      Delete
    12. Good point about making it better for those working at Disco Court (although that was the reason the 14 was rerouted a couple of years back). But I think being primarily a Uni service, they're less likely to do that.

If I was revamping them, I'd probably do it like this:
U1 - Run a vacation timetable on Saturdays
U1N - Introduce a nightbus similar to Unilink going Talbot Campus - Winton Banks - Cranborne House - Dorchester House - Town centre (I have no idea if this would actually be needed, but that's why I'm making it up on here and not in charge of Unibus routing!)
U2 - Hourly on Saturdays as above
U3 - Keep as it is
U4 - Turn it into a circular route...just like the old days!: Westbourne - Town - Cranborne House - Talbot Campus - Wallisdown - Mountbatten - Alderney - Herbert Ave - Branksome - Westbourne. Run it hourly in each direction, everyone wins!

  16. When you visit Southbourne Buses website, you will find a new route from Spring 2018, the route S105. I am wondering where it would run from and to... Any idea of what the route 105 would be in the past? Including Gardbus, Mr Simon Gard's previous company?

  17. think 105 ran from Poole to Burton via Bournemouth , Boscombe and Christchurch, with some services going on to Ringwood via Bransgore….finished about 2004 when the morebus project started

    1. Thank you, the S105 may just run between Burton and Bournemouth Hospital via Somerford Estate, Christchurch and Bronte Road... that’s the only thing I can think of, unless Mr Gard has a different idea. (I am now speculating, we need to wait for further details)

    2. There was also a 105 between Wareham and Wool a couple of years ago, but that's rather a long way out for SB.

Complete speculation, but given their Ringwood base, it could be a route parallel to more's 125 (Ringwood - Bransgore - Christchurch), maybe operating on the days that more don't. 105/125...? I'm stretching here!

    3. I think it's unlikely to run alongside the 125 - Gardbus did run the 125 but More took it over when Gardbus ceased trading in 2015. Clearly it didn't work for Gardbus then, doubt it would work for Southbourne Buses now.

You can see the original Gardbus timetable here: https://mangopear.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Gardbus-timetable-routes-125-and-126-valid-from-5th-January-2015.pdf

    4. Maybe it'll run via Somerford Estate to Bournemouth Square, trying to take custom from Yellows 1b requiring a change of bus at Christchurch off-peak weekdays and/or offering a weekend service where Yellows no longer do. Complete speculation of course. Maybe Mr. Gard has just added it as a Christmas tease for us and it'll never materialise!

    5. Mr Gard confirmed that the service will run from March, so until then we need to keep an eye on VOSA/Traveline from January...

    6. We can confirm that a service has been registered from 04/03/19. At this present time we are unable to release further details due to this information being commercially sensitive. However we can confirm this is not a route previously operated by us and is not serving Hampshire or West Dorset as suggested in earlier posts.
