What the hell has this posting got to do with bus travel
ReplyDeleteHe is explaning what routes are running
ReplyDeleteThe above remark made at 1408 referred to a posting which seems to have been deleted by Southampton Bus Updat ,or someone
ReplyDeleteYes, that's right. There was some spam that had got through Google's filter, which I subsequently removed.
DeleteThe usual array of different service levels. In truth these days between Christmas and New Year are difficult days for operators to find the right balance between cost, revenue, passenger expectations, contractual requirements (for tendered services) , staff availability, road traffic levels and other factors and come up with a suitable service plan.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting on boxing Day evening, just how busy services were, after first had all gone home! Bluestar made lots of new friends, with many saying that they were trying bluestar for the first time, and how they will never use first again, because they felt let down.
DeleteDon't worry all thoes who stated they will never use First again, within the next week when operations get beck to normal, will all be back on their usual First bus.I don't know why they felt let down as there is no difference in operation by First this year over the Holiday period to any other recent years past.
DeleteThey will all have to use Bluestar on New Year`s Day when there are no First buses running.
DeleteThey had to last year as well, and if they go out New Years Day that will also be the same as last year
DeleteBe interesting to see whether the New Year`s Day evening journeys receive any real patronage.
DeleteVery little I would imagine.however they are there for those who might want them.
DeleteIt's quite interesting how the conversation immediately turned to "First customers are running to BlueStar as they are the only ones running near normal timetables."
ReplyDeleteIt was as recent as 2015 that even BlueStar was running a skeleton servo e Boxing Day and 12 months later running a full Sunday service.
You were unfortunately all wrapped up in your little cosy "BlueStar is great" bubble to not even notice Stagecoach were running a full Sunday service in many towns this year as well.
I think you will find that this conversation was about service levels in Southampton, where service levels reflect the true meaning of the word "service", from Bluestar! Unlike the downward spiral of first bus.
DeleteI'm not sure what you mean by the true meaning of the word "service" - the bus industry is a business - it is not a public utility, nor is it a nationalised industry, it is not a government (local or central) department either. Therefore, the businesses make business decisions, just like any other industry. What I find on this blog is the volume of opinion of how the businesses operate - I wonder if there is a blog about than looks at supermarkets in a town - "Southampton Supermarket update", where people are commenting about whether stores are open, the times they are open, the amount of heinz beans are stocked compared to own brand beans and so on. At the end of the day customers choose which ever supermarket (sorry bus company) than serves their needs and a lot of time it is about convenience (which ever bus comes along first - where there is competition.
DeleteDont forget trolleys
DeleteGSC is improving services on NYD comparing to last year. In Bournemouth they are running a few routes on a Sunday Timetable, example of services 5/6 16/17. In Southampton they are running an improved service comparing to NYD 2018. For example, service 12 to Calmore is running pretty much a Sunday timetable this year, whilst on last year there was 4 return journeys. It is not the same as Stagecoach, but who knows what happens next year... with these simple gestures you can take away SOME patronage from competitors. First, unfortunately, is not following the modern times, and have two days off (Christmas and NYD). Yellow buses in Bournemouth does not run on Christmas but does on NYD on a special timetable.
ReplyDeleteAlways interesting to see the industry and each having their own strategy.
as has been said on here before the shopping centre element of West quay is closed all day on New Years Day so hardly an incentive for bus operators to provide a service on this day
ReplyDeleteConsidering Eastleigh are Playing Havant and Waterlooville on New Years Day it would make sense for the Bluestar 2 to run
