New Year's Eve 2017 and New Year's Day 2018

Here's how our region's buses will be running over the New Year weekend:


There's a normal Saturday service on all routes on Saturday 30th December 2017.

On New Year's Eve 2017, the same level of service will run as did so on Christmas Eve - click here for full details.

Then on New Year's Day 2018, here's what will be running:

  • Bluestar: Special timetable on routes 1, 2, 4, 9, 12, 17 and 18 only. Other routes will not run.
  • More: Special timetables operate on routes m1/m2, 5, 8/9, 13, 16/17 and X3. No service on other routes.
  • Salisbury Reds: Sunday service on X3. No service on other routes.
  • Stagecoach: Full Sunday service. Please note that Salisbury Reds journeys on Activ8 will not run
  • Yellow: Special timetable on routes B1/B3, P1/P2/P3, R1/R2/R3, U6 and V1/V2 only. No service on other routes.
  • Damory, First, Unilink, Xelabus: No service.

Here are your New Year's Day services in detail, by area:


Only the following routes will run in and around Southampton, with these special timetables:


No other services will run. There is no service at all on First, Unilink, Xelabus or Wheeler's.



Only the following More and Yellow routes will run, with these special timetables. There will be no service on any other route in Bournemouth and Poole.




In Portsmouth and Havant, Stagecoach will be providing a full Sunday service. See their network map here and find timetables here.


First however, will not be running any service whatsoever, so most of Portsmouth and all of Fareham and Gosport will be a bus-free zone.



In Winchester too, Stagecoach are providing a full Sunday service. See their network map here and find timetables here.

The only other route running in Winchester will be Bluestar 1, with this special New Year's Day timetable:



Only two routes will be running in Salisbury on New Year's Day: More/Salisbury Reds X3, with this special timetable:

... and on Activ8, Stagecoach will be running their journeys to a Sunday timetable, but Salisbury Reds aren't running any of their journeys. To make it clear, here are the journeys that will be running:

No other services will run.



Normal service resumes on Tuesday January 2nd, with a new timetable on More X8, which has a route change to serve the new Lidl in Blandford. There's also the launch of More X8A, which will be a new Blandford town service. Full details here.

Xelabus also have some minor changes from 2nd January on Eastleigh routes X4, X6 and X7. Details here.

  1. You missed QuayConnect, which will have a half hourly service between around 8am-8pm

    1. Don`t know why they bother with Quay Connect,when Unilink U1 goes from the station to town quay far more frequently,plus you can use Bluestar period passes on U1,unlike Quay Connect!

Red Funnel are not wasting cash, the service stops right outside their terminal unlike any other services, is timed to connect with their ferries and waits if they are late, and every time a boat comes in it is packed with their customers some of which have luggage and some who need to get to the station as fast as possible to make connections.

    7. National express are/were in the deal aswell as an example you can book to newport(iow) via nx to southampton quayconnect to redjet then 1 to newport. The views on quayconnect seem to be views of a mainlander a resident of the iow or tourists coming into southampton may have a complete different outlook on quayconnect also proberbly wouldent have a key. As 1 post rightley says it stops outside red funnels front door if quayconnect dident run some clients of theres may chose wightlink or hovertravel(who have a dedicated bus)

  2. Two months after first withdrew their no.1 route and the timetable is still on the bus stop at Lordshill Centre.Dosen`t anyone check these things?

    2. I've mentioned similar things in past to First & they usually say thanks for telling us but it's the council who look after bus stop signs, not us.

    3. They may say that about the electronic displays, and the bus shelters themselves, but the timetable cases are wholly their responsibility.

    4. Weird. They didn't waste anytime removing the timetable and sign from the stop in Olive Road. It was removed a week after the service ended.

    6. I've seen on Twitter recently folk mention to FirstBus about X4/5 times missing etc etc & every time FirstBus reply with "it's the council's responsibility"! Funny then how Bluestar have put on Twitter how they've been out updating their own timetables with new stickers etc.
      FirstBus are only good at one thing- commercial suicide!

    7. I'm not sure where the complaints relate to but in fairness whether the council or the operator is responsible for roadside info can vary from place to place. Some councils leave it to operators, other councils prefer to do it themselves in a standard style and don't allow operators to put up their own material.

  3. In exeter bus station the x52 still has a timetable displayed from the last change(cancelled closue of bus station) but has a note next to it saying this service no longer calls at exeter bus station but goes to exeter st davids

    2. Frances May Searle t/a AVMT (Axe Valley) will be operating from 22 January 2018 between Seaton (Marine Parade) and Exeter (Bus Station) via Sidford and Newton Poppleford.

      Most of the fleet are in Devon General red.

  4. Saw a BS18 bus pull away from Shirley Mc Donalds stop this afternoon,heading towards town,yet there were a few people still stood there waiting for a bus.Don`t people check the levels of bus services on days like New Years Day?had they of bothered to check ,they would have known that there was no other buses running,other than BS4 and 17 and they both went into town like the 18.

    1. Twitter also appears full of people who want to have a go at Bluestar for not running later buses, and now they are stranded. The online effort of their New Year's Day timetables have been up for weeks, their leaflets have been similarly available, yet somehow they are at fault! Madness. Would you just turn up at Heathrow or Gatwick, and assume that because you caught a flight at 7pm two weeks ago, that it should be running today too? The public assume far too much, and check far too little. Of course, some may see all this as testament to the normal unerring way that Bluestar sticks to such a regular pattern, that they don't need to bother checking, which works on 363 days per year!

    2. Putting another spin on this discussion. On Friday evening I was waiting for the last BlueStar bus of the day from Marchwood to Southampton. I'd already seen on Google Maps that it was running ahead of the timetable.

      The bus passed me without stopping, it was being driven at such a speed that it would have been unsafe to stop. Needless to say it was running ahead of the timetable when it passed me and I am aware that
      they were operating to Saturday timetables on Friday.

    3. Well I do hope that you made a full complaint to the operator? This sort of thing should also be reported to the TC so that they are aware and can take financial steps against the operator, which can be Draconian!

  5. I have complained to BlueStar, so far no acknowledgement though.

    Generally, I live in an area with the kind of bus service that forces you into having a car. I realise that usage of public transport should be encouraged, however there are limits and traffic clogged roads that include empty bus lanes are a source of frustration to me.

    New year's Day saw a special service, BS 8 was not running, as a Marchwood resident this meant no service, but I was just a short walk away from being able to see the BS9 operate non-stop past the village. The logic of the 9 not coming through Marchwood at off-peak escapes me.

  6. I think the problem is simply a running time issue. The trip to Langley or Fawley takes just short of an hour, and the same back. This fits a regular service perfectly, but if you take it off route, it means an extra bus and driver and lots of wastage. Experiments, some long running, have taken place through the village, but the uptake has been very poor. It's a place that should have better potential for growth, but the patronage remains stubbornly low, hence it now gets the service that it deserves!

  7. No First scheduled buses in Portsmouth & Gosport/Fareham but they were running Rail replacement buses all over that area, so staff would have been in depot & all those associated costs!

  8. Yes, however First running a Rail Replacement is a fixed cost contract, for which their extra costs should be factored in.

    Running public service is a commercial gamble, for which they must have felt the financial risk was not worth it.

    1. Running any commercial service within Southampton seems a risk for First!
      They seem to have pinned all their hopes on winning the Uni contract and failed. Speaking to an ex First driver recently, he told me that their flagship depot is now so under utilized that they even tried to let part of it out, but failed because it is surrounded by weight limits. This means that their few remaining routes have the burden of the full depot costs to bear, meaning that they are even less profitable than they were. Very worrying times for those still working there, especially as Bluestar are so inventively chipping away at their patronage, and are about to do so even more. I personally think that First will be extinct locally by next Christmas, with the litmus test coming at the start of the new school year, when they will possibly have handed back the Brockenhurst contract, which will tell us all we need to know. The only staff that still appear to work there are those expecting a big redundancy cheque, those that are still under a training bond, and a few that may still be blind to what others see happening. I think I read that they guy in charge at First, is the same man who took them out of Northampton and Plymouth? If this is correct, I am not surprised by the number of First drivers who have shown up behind the wheel of Bluestar in the last couple of months! Does anyone think that First can survive here, bearing in mind their huge depot cost, and lack of revenue earning routes left in existence?

  9. Yes, First have been running buses to replace their trains while Network Rail did maintenance and upgrading work between Fareham and Southampton Central. Not only local "First" buses, though. I've seen Luckett's Morton's of Bramley and a coach firm from Exeter represented over this last weekend. New Year's Day they were running First Green Line "London/Windsor" double deckers. As Anon 8 Jan 21.40 says, those will have been factored in for the hire price, and I've no doubt that they'll be sending the bill to Network Rail.

  12. From Sun 21st Bluestar 18 will be the only bus route to serve Bitterne centre on a Sunday night.Although,if you want to walk up to Townhill Way,you can still catch a First 7!

  13. Bluestar seem very eager to advertise their 7 extension. They've already pasted over the First 12 stickers on the bus stop flags in Millbrook, and the 12 doesn't even finish for another week!
