Yellow service cuts

Yellow Buses, in administration, have announced a cut to services across their network.

Withdrawn from tomorrow, Wednesday 3rd August:

  • 6h
  • 727
  • Buster's New Forest Explorer

Cut to a Saturday service six days a week:

  • 1/1a/1b
  • 2
  • 3x (and what remains of the 3)
  • 4
  • 5/5a
  • 6

Route curtailed:

  • Buster's Beach Bus, running between Alum Chine and Hengistbury Head only

Normal service continues:

  • 18
  • 33
  • 36
  • 737

Drivers may be being tempted away by Go Ahead's More offering a staggered £2000 golden hello for experienced drivers signing up with them

Yellow Buses' future is far from certain. We should hear in the next week and a half whether or not an undisclosed nationally known operator is going to step in to save them from collapse.

  1. It wouldn't surprise me if they announce another cut to run on a Sunday timetable.

Some drivers may have left now since the administration announcement.

  3. Details now on Morebus website. https://www.morebus.co.uk/we-will-be-running-extra-routes

Morebus will be taking over all Yellows routes with the following amendments:

    - The 1/1b will run every 30 minutes with a combined 15 minute frequency. No extensions west from Bournemouth to Poole
    - The 1a will run every 15 minutes with no extensions from Somerford to New Milton
    - The 2 will run every 30 minutes between Bournemouth and Castlepoint only
    - The 4 will run between Bournemouth and Castlepoint only
    - The 5/5a will be reduced from every 20 to every 30 minutes (every 15 mins combined)
    - The 6 will be combined with a new route 6a which will extend to Kinson. This gives Wallisdown - Bearwood an increase in frequency to every 30 minutes

Seemingly no news on the tendered routes, but it looks like many areas of BCP will be without a bus service come Friday morning.

  4. A quick calculation of the Saturday timetables shows a vehicle requirement of 25 for the reduced timetables. With the 15 new Uni buses that's 10 buses brought in from elsewhere as per Andrew Wickham's tweet. It's going to look very different in Gervis Place on Saturday.

    1. Looking at the caption image on the Morebus article, I wonder if they will be using Yellow's buses to operate the extra routes?

    2. Or simply paint their new fleet yellow?

    3. Anon 21:08 - Andrew Wickham already confirmed no Yellow Buses are being acquired.

As far as I can see - Yellow Buses as a brand is no more.

  5. Now that Yellow buses are going to cease trading as of tomorrow…
    I am wondering:
    - what will happen on Friday 5th?
    - what will happen to the tendered routes (18, 33 and 36)?
    - will morebus try to keep YB livery?
    - will morebus change branding to yellow buses?
    - will morebus in the mid/long term go through a restructuring bus services in the conurbation, including renumbering, change routes and destinations?

    1. Nothing will happen on Friday 5th - I suspect GoAhead need to get the buses prepped.

Tendered routes - per morebus - will not run. They also confirm they MIGHT run them in the future if the bus and driver numbers allow.

Doubt morebus are interested in the Yellow brand. That would be more down an independents street.

I suspect there will be a network audit in due course, maybe more minor diversions of the odd service. I can't see anything happening this side of the October Half term.

  6. I suppose that there would be nothing to stop Nat Ex trading as Yellow Coaches bidding for the council contract work - just because they haven't bought the bus business doesn't mean they can't expand into bus routes later.

Realistically though, can't see them wanting to upset GoAhead with such a move.

Does this mean that NatEx now hold the megabus franchise in the area?

My thoughts go to all drivers and staff.

  7. A very sorry state of affairs, and I hope all of the Yellow Bus staff find alternative jobs.

I imagine that Morebus will just cherry pick the best of the routes and then put in ridiculously high prices in when the council tenders now they have the monopoly. Not a healthy situation, and will cost the residents of BCP a lot of money for a reduced service.
