Yellow numbers to return

Last January (2017), Yellow Buses revamped their entire network throughout Bournemouth and Poole. Route numbers were replaced by lettered 'lines', with the routes identified by a letter and a number. The burghers of Bournemouth have spoken and from 8th April this year, many of the changes are reversed. The lettered lines are replaced by numbers again, although some of them will still have 'a' versions (1a, 4a etc).

Here's how the new network will look from April:

Compared to the current network, this is slightly cut down. Bournemouth Airport is cut off from public transport and West Moors loses its Yellow link. Some of the council-funded routes are up for retender, so Yellow might retain them or they could go to another operator depending on what the councils decide.

Here's the current network, running since September 2017:

This is what the current lines looked like in April 2017:

Before the lines were introduced, this was how the numbered network looked prior to January 2017:

Timetables will be out in a few weeks, but the frequencies for the new routes are shown here.

At the same time, the Route One ticket is being withdrawn, which will present fare payers on some routes with a price rise.

  1. Poole Council have updated their website with a section regarding the retendering of the D1, H1 and U8 routes. No mention of the parts of the U9 and U10 routes that serve Rossmore and Dale Valley with Poole.

Mean while there is no update for the Bournemouth routes on Bournemouth’s website. - tendered section of C1 and dropped routes R4, R5 & R6.

  2. Service 1 now running via North Road instead of Constitution Hill Road leaves morebus 14, 16 and 17 as the only services Constitution Hill Road so a reduction in service there. Passengers for Bournemouth will need to use the 16.

Also service 3 seems interesting. Poole to Castlepoint via Ashley Cross, Westbourne, Bournemouth and Charminster, duplicating the m1.

    1. Can't really see the point of yellows 1 and 3 duplicating m1 and m2 when they'll be at half the frequency and More will always ensure they're running the more comfortable buses. It would make more sense to swap the routes on the Poole section to at least have some links that are unique to encourage some people to wait for a yellow.

This new timetable is very bad news for direct links to Bournemouth Hospital.

    2. Have to say, I am disappointed with Yellows. I was hopeful for them to keep the links to Bournemouth Hospital from Poole and Westbourne.
And the 3 is copycatting M1 and the new 1 is copycatting M2.

  4. Though I suspect it'll be a one horse race, can anyone see any of the tendered routes going to another company?

There's pretty much only Morebus who also operate in the area. Maybe they'll want the opportunity to steal a few routes but I really can't see it

  5. Based on frequencies it looks like a 50/50 improvement and reduction, but some of these 'improvements' seem to simply duplicate Morebus services.
    Improvements:
1 (former P2/P3/P4/R1): buses every 7-8 minutes between Christchurch and Westbourne, then every 15 minutes on to Poole. A definite improvement here, as buses were every 10-20 minutes before! Buses then run every 15 minutes on to Poole which is the same.
2 (former B3/R1/R2/P2/P3): Buses every 15 minutes between Castlepoint, Townsend and Royal Bournemouth Hospital, an improvement from every 30 minutes.
4a (former B2): Buses every 30 minutes between Bearwood, Kinson and Bournemouth instead of hourly so a definite improvement here.
5/5A (former V1/V2): Buses every 15 minutes on each route instead of every 20, so a definite improvement here.
8 (former U9): Buses every 30 minutes instead of hourly, but at what cost?

    Reductions:
Lots of routes are also being cut back, so here we go.
    B1: Unknown.
B2/B4: Services on B4 withdrawn, B2 curtailed to Bearwood. Alternative Morebus services available.
C1: Castlepoint to Bournemouth section cut without any alternative.
D1: Whole service cut but short walk from services around Christchurch and Southbourne.
    H1: Whole service cut.
    R4/R5/R6: All services cut.
    U8: All services cut.
U9/U10: All services between Poole and Alderney West cut, as well as the former U10 routing.
X37/X38: No mention of these, which I presume are cut?
1b (former P2/P3): Buses every 30 minutes along 'the back roads', and no Sunday service. A more frequent service between Christchurch and Bournemouth though.
2 (former B3/R1/R2/P2/P3): Frequency halved to every 15 minutes, and through service to Bournemouth is lost from Iford and Christchurch Road. Less buses along Holdenhurst Road. Slightly slower route, but only around 4 minutes slower?
3a (former R3): Buses between Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Castlepoint halved.

Of course there may be more cuts which we can't see from just the frequency but it does look like improvements, small cuts and loss of tendered services on the whole (except U9/U10 and R4/R5/R6 of course).
Finally something to note is the loss of links between Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole. If people don't like this I guess they will simply extend the 3 to Royal Bournemouth Hospital and have the 3a cut back to Castlepoint?

On Facebook, Yellows said they will cease to operate X37/X38 due to poor patronage.
C1 (Bournemouth to Castlepoint), D1 H1 and U8 have been retendered to Yellow Buses and further information will be revealed.
U9 (section between Alderney - Oakdale - Poole) and U10 (section between Alderney - Trinidad Estate - Cranbrook Heights - Poole) are subsidised by Poole Council, as well as the U10 section between University - Ensbury Park - Winton is subject to a subsidy from Bournemouth Council.

    2. Not so sure about the U9 and U10. Neither Bournemouth Council, Poole Council or Yellow Buses list any part of these routes as susbsidised (compared to the U8 timetable where it is mentioned). From YB's own Facebook, they say those are witdrawn due to lack of use.

      Delete
    3. Sorry Claudio but the tenders for C1 D1 H1 and U8 have not closed yet, and the results will be announced at the beginning of March. There are no tendered sections of U9 or U10. X37 and X38 are withdrawn, because Yellow Buses facebook page has revealed they are ceasing to operate the Brockenhurst College services from Easter. No official confirmation yet but Go South Coast are supposedly the replacement operator.

    5. Looking at my 2009 timetable, it says that certain journeys on the 26 (now U9) are funded by BOP. By 2011 it no longer says that, so probably got removed around that time.

  6. I do not entirely agree with your comments.

As listed above Poole Council are tendering the D1, H1 and U8 (my local, quick route to Bournemouth town centre). However I have been advised elsewhere that the D1 tender incorporates part of the C1.

From next Thursday, Ken has advised us we should be able to see the full timetables on Traveline.

  13. More have confirmed to The Bournemouth Echo the purchase of 41 new Euro6 Alexander Dennis E200 MMC buses to run on the M1 and M2 routes. How yellows think their aging double decker's running as 1 and 3 are going to succeed against this with half the frequency between Poole and Bournemouth just because they've replaced a bit of the yellow with pink or purple is beyond me.

There are three viable routes between Upper Parkstone and Poole. To duplicate the same two with the same destinations as more does nothing to grow custom and everything to weaken their position further.

Has it been confirmed where the existing m1/m2 stock is going? To Bluestar 18, passed down within more or elsewhere?

    3. Aging? I think you'll find the buses used are around 2-3 years old for the 1/3, so yes aging but every day the other buses are in service they are ageing!

      Delete
    4. Ahh if they're that new then fair enough. I've seen far older vehicles running on it recently, but maybe that's where they've been applying the new colours and had buses out of service.

Still think colour coding yellow buses is a crazy idea, and especially not needed now they're reverting the numbering. It's an idea completely alien to bus users in the area, who just expect yellow buses to be yellow. It's adding complication in the name of simplicity.

      Delete
    5. I think they are planning to use the 17 plate MMCs and 14/15 plate geminis.

      Delete
    6. From the colours I've seen so far, some of the MMCs and 14/15 Geminis are going to the 3. Some of the MMCs and some Streetlites will be used for the 1. There's also some Versas with light blue for the 2 (great, a frequency cut AND smaller buses along Holdenhurst Road).

But let's focus on the big issue here - the mix of yellow and magenta on the 3s looks awful. Quite like the dark blue MMCs and the blue Versas, but every single bus I've seen with the magenta colouring looks cheap and horrible.

It was noted that the 4 via Winton will terminate at Castlepoint, meaning patients travelling to the RBH will need to change buses or use the More 15.

Agreed extending some of the M1’s to the RBH would be helpful.

    3. From the Bournemouth Echo article, they did mention that the new routes would include an early morning bus from Kinson to the hospital for staff starting at 7am, so I'm assuming the 25 will be a one return journey per day sort of thing

    4. More could extend the 14 from Kinson onto RBH via Castlepoint.

Anyone know whether 41 is an increase on the current number of buses required for M1/M2? Wonder if the number of new buses would allow expansion to RBH and/or Christchurch.

    5. As the poster of the above comment regarding extending the 14, I'll presume my consultancy cheque from Andrew Wickham is in the post!

I work at Aviation Park. The A1/14/B1 was redirected from Hurn to Parley with good reason, the stretch from Bournemouth Airport to Blackwater Junction can be horrendously congested at peak hours, especially so with the current Blackwater roadworks. It was just too unreliable in its old form.

      Delete
    2. The current B1 route through Moordown and Winton is much longer than the old A1 and skips Hurn village. Ideally, there needs to be a new link road between the airport and A338 to relieve congestion at Blackwater Junction and make the old A1 route more reliable.

    1. Feel free to view this map and have an idea what the revamped route 14 will look like. However it may not be 100% correct. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1H_4gaKMd2Ak5sRkkzyMKrtuNZ2ZKHSM0&ll=50.769229846063624%2C-1.8977384179687533&z=11

    2. Wonder where this will leave Yellow's new route 25 the timetable of which redirects to the current to Royal Line one on Traveline, but which AIUI was supposed to serve this corridor once a day.

    3. Sorry! Slight blooper on the coding. 25 will display properly from this weeks update.

  32. Hants & Dorset bus 16 ran from Bournemouth to Christchurch (and sometimes extended to New Milton) via Moordown, Parley, Hurn Airport (Bournemouth Airport to you if you're not local) Fairmile and Christchurch rail station. It would be nice to see a modernised version of this with financial help from the Airport and joining it to the 24 service.

  34. These registrations were made 65 days in advance. Makes me think there may be more to come, and may not mean good news at all.
All of your pathetic theories about giving routes 6 and 8 to Xelabus aren't prove.

    2. Why would any theory be pathetic? It is just someone else's opinion, which may differ from your own. Please try to be nice to others on here. They may not all have your advantage of being in contact with Andrew Wickham, but surely they have a right to express an opinion, just as you are?

  35. These people need to be put in place. And I am no privileged, anyone can contact Mr Wickham on twitter.
One thing is opinions, another thing is UNFUNDED THEORIES AND SPECULATION. And the bus industry can live very well without it. Show some respect to the bus industry and IDENTIFY YOURSELF, rather than hiding yourself in an "anonymous" comment.

  36. Oh dear Claudio, you really are out of order here. Did you really just say that these people need to be put in their place? That sounds like you are a dictator, and is simply not acceptable. A theory is often speculation, or it would be a fact!
Regarding your point about twitter, I for one cannot contact anyone on it, as I have no wish to be part of it. I would also prefer to remain anonymous, as I would not wish to be recognised, due to my employment.
I was simply asking you to remain civil to good people on this blog, rather than being heavy handed towards them. We are entitled to opinions, but we are certainly not entitled to put people in their place sir!
