  1. Always intrigues me why some operators finish early on NYE, whereas others - even in the same area - run a full service and even Nightbuses. You'd think it would be a decent night for running buses late

    1. I remember when Yellow Buses used to run until close of service on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve
Mine you, this was also the same period of time when Yellow Buses would run a full Sunday Service on New Years Day whereas Wilts & Dorset ran no services at all.

      How the tables have turned...

    2. The reasons why most operators don't operate....

Because most people are out by 2100 and won't be looking to travel again until 0100 - that's four hours of drivers either kicking their heels or driving round carrying thin air.

Also, when you do get to 0100, you potentially have a load of rather drunk individuals who have consumed to excess with all the risks of that.

    3. With respect, you are more likely to get a drunk on board at 4 pm on a Thursday afternoon, than at New Year!
Anyone consuming huge amounts of alcohol, has no idea what bus to catch, nor from where, at what time. The normal late night drunks, are happy and harmless.

I would also argue your point about demand between 2100 and 0100. There are lots of people employed in jobs that finish earlier, who need to get home or out to party. Tesco express, Subway, Hospital workers, Cinema employees etc, etc.

    4. With respect, that is rubbish. Firstly, the idea that an average Thursday afternoon has more p*ssed up people than New Years Eve is frankly beyond belief.

Stagecoach Manchester actually do have a break from 2200 to 0100 on the routes they operate reflecting the lack of demand at that time before they then operate some night buses.

The reality is that whilst there are some people who will finish work at 2200, most people are finishing early (e.g. major shopping centres, retail parks and superstores, factories etc).

You may care to argue but that is the reason why most operators do not operate NYE services, rightly or wrongly.

    5. It may be rubbish in your eyes, but it also happens to be true! This is for the reasons stated, which you appear not to have read.

  2. As New Year approaches may I wish all at Southampton Bus Update a very Happy one.As for how operators run on New Years Eve is a mystery only known by them.Todays bus world in some instances is a very strange one which doesn't always benefit its potential customers
